Privacy Policy

This policy describes information collected during a visit to Harrison County Criminal History, how that information is used, and the limited circumstances in which it may be disclosed. By using the website, you acknowledge the practices stated below.

Data You Give Us Directly

Search Queries

A name or location entered in a search tool is sent directly to the outside provider that operates that tool. The provider processes the request and supplies its results. Harrison County Criminal History does not retain or log those query terms on its own systems.

Messages and Contact Submissions

An email sent to us may be kept long enough to review and answer it. We do not disclose the message outside our organization unless a valid legal duty requires disclosure.

Data We Gather Automatically

When a page loads, servers may automatically receive technical information about the visit:

  • Page-view dates, times, and duration
  • Device type and operating system
  • Browser name and version
  • IP address assigned to the device
  • Pages viewed during the visit
  • Referring website, when one is supplied

Cookies and Analytics

Cookies are small files placed on a device. They and analytics services help measure aggregate traffic, popular pages, and where visits end. Browser controls can block cookies, though doing so may change how some website functions behave.

What We Do With This Data

Collected information is used only for operating, measuring, securing, and supporting the website and its search connections.

  • Finding and correcting technical problems
  • Directing a query to the applicable search partner
  • Maintaining site availability and performance
  • Understanding which pages visitors use
  • Displaying advertising that may reflect visitor interests

No Criminal-Record Data on File

Harrison County Criminal History does not maintain, compile, or sell a personal criminal-record database. It identifies official access routes through Harrison County record offices, the courts, the West Virginia State Police Criminal Identification Bureau, the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation, and the West Virginia State Police Sex Offender Registry. The website is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and visitor information is not assembled into a consumer report or a record about another person.

Third-Party Search Partners

Outside companies operate the search boxes. Information entered there is governed by the provider's privacy policy, retention rules, and sharing practices rather than this policy. Review those terms before sending a query because we do not control the provider's systems.

Links to Other Websites

Links may lead to Harrison County offices, West Virginia courts, WVSP, WVDCR, registry resources, legal organizations, or outside search services. Once a visitor follows an external link, the destination's privacy terms apply. Review them before providing personal information.

Advertising providers may use their own systems to measure activity across websites and select ads. Their tracking is not operated by Harrison County Criminal History.

Who Might See Your Data

We do not sell personal information. Limited data may be available to:

  • Analytics providers measuring traffic and performance
  • Search providers processing a query submitted to their tool
  • Advertising networks serving material on a page
  • Government or law-enforcement authorities acting under a valid legal order

How We Protect Your Data

Reasonable standard safeguards are used for information under our control. No internet-connected system is completely secure, however, so we cannot guarantee that a breach or unauthorized access will never occur.

Users Under 18

The website is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone younger than 18. If such information comes to our attention, it will be removed.

Your Data Rights

Applicable privacy and consumer-protection rules may provide rights concerning personal information. Public access to Harrison County and state records is separately governed by the West Virginia Freedom of Information Act, W. Va. Code Chapter 29B, while criminal-history dissemination is governed by W. Va. Code §15-2-24. Subject to applicable law, you may:

  • Request deletion of personal data we control
  • Ask to correct inaccurate personal information
  • Request access to personal information held about you
  • Opt out of processing when applicable law provides that choice

Updates to This Policy

This privacy policy may be revised. A revised version becomes available on this page and carries an updated effective date.
